Here's a clip from last night's bicep touch up session. First off, I rarely train my arms as they are an over dominant body part on me. But, in the nearing weeks towards a show, I'll do light, isolation exercises to help with the separation and detail in my arms. Here's one of my favorite exercises to isolate and develop great bicep peaks (which I got from @chriscormier2 when he did these back in the day in some bodybuilding magazine 12 years ago). These are called single arm spider curls with your chest facing an incline bench. All you have to do is find a weight that you can easily get 12-14 reps with while getting in 2-3 second negatives, let one arm hang, the other arm supporting against the bench. As you curl, keep the elbow on the working arm slightly in front of you. This will isolate your bicep even more and prevent your shoulder from assisting you during the concentric contraction. Also, at the peak of the contraction, squeeze your bicep as hard as you can for a split second and turn your pinky finger towards you and your thumb away from you at the same time. I got 3rd callouts at that show 😅. But ultimately I didn't care. I learned I wasn't eating enough to carb up but most importantly, I learned that this isn't my whole life and it doesn't need to be. This loss taught me that well-needed lesson.
Of course I follow the plan, I work my ass off, I want to place well, etc. But I sure as hell won't blindly throw my health to the wind. I love competing but it doesn't define me or control me. I've noticed some people who compete that will take any and everything, ruin their health *for life* and think that that is them working harder than the next 🤔....No. They are just willing to sacrifice their health and future. For what?! 15 seconds on a stage?! And more often than not, it's unnecessary.
Health comes first: mental and physical. I go to the dentist, I get my physicals, I take care of myself. I see too many people *with health insurance* not doing this. Why?! Especially if you're insured! Use that shit!!!!! Especially if you're doing 'whatever it takes.' (⬅️ what does that mean even?).
Self-care and health needs to be a priority in everyone's life. Prevention is better than treating something you could've avoided having in the first place, and you can't care properly for others if you don't care about yourself.
