Salvatore Emblema “To build and compose 50_80” at @galleriafonti until July 26th
•
In this exhibition, this process of “re-working” is carefully analyzed, with a theoretical mechanism addressed to design a subtle but stable evolutionary continuity. The result is a device of direct affiliation between the finitely pictorial, if not “para-figurative”, approach of the Eighties and the landscape and architectural surveys that Salvatore Emblema carried on throughout the previous years, with his environmental interventions made of bare canvases and metal nets, settled down at the boundary of minimalistic grid. The exhibition uses a consistent documentary apparatus,
provided by Museo Emblema Archive, which draws a kind of chronological and scientific counterpoint to the artworks on display.

Exhibition’s main goal is to focus some register, medium and pictorial shifts, even to expressive purposes, with a quasi-mathematical game of opposing causes and effects. Central point of the show is the noticeable stylistic leap in Emblema's research from the late Seventies up to the
following decade. What happens from the first half of the 1980s, in the work of the artist, may be perceived - but only at first glance- as a sort of 'pictorial counter-reform'. A counter-reform that seems to cancels and replaces the previous operative approach,all aimed at the analysis of the painting as a subtraction of painting itself.

From the work with raw materials dating back to the Fifties until the markedly pictorial and gestural turning point occurred on the first half of the Eighties. To Build and Compose is an expanded show: alternating paintings, sculptures, photographic documents and unreleased prototypes of environmental installations.

Salvatore Emblema started to develope this evanescent sculpture in the early 70s. Through this metallic colored nets, installed in the natural or architectonic space he aimed to build a reverse volume, shaping and coloring the void. The sculpture is painted in blue, red and white; colors that Emblema prepared himself to achieve a chromatic surface, able to absorbs light and in order to weaken and underpower any reflecting effects. It is conceived as a kind of survey on architectural space and therefore articulated, on a formal level, like a contrast between physical presence in space of the artwork and virtual spatiality generated by the vision through the artwork itself. Emblema’s colored net sculptures also work as the basis for the subsequent pictorial research in the late 70s. After this experience paintings work as a continuum-on-wall of large scale installations in the real space.

Salvatore Emblema is a worthy mate of artists who, although younger, gave him a role of a forerunner of a world that will become Arte Povera and Land Art. He always intended to underline the fact of using nature to create art and not to practice art to deal with nature. This is the why his work is totally different and far away from Richard Long or Giuseppe Penone ones. He never used a copy of a tree or stones to carry on his creative approach. If anything, he used stones in order to deriving his own colors and the trees, turning them into charcoal, to using it to draw. His works, often inserted in the natural context, gain a sort of double force: they use nature twice. If the jute canvas had not been so wisely enhanced, through the inclusion of colors, wich are products of natural transformations themself, everything would be banal or trite in terms of creatività.

...Sfilato, Detessitura, Trasparente (“Frayed,” “Unweaving,” “Transparent”). It belongs to Emblema’s first series of works, in which he focused on the concept of “transparency”, evoked by the balanced relationship between the warp and weft of a coarse textile material, the absence of any pictorial intervention and a formal composition entrusted only to the effect of perception created between the jute surface, the wooden frame and the wall behind the work. The cross defined by the axes of the frame, as well as the tension keys on the frame, visible behind the perimetral fraying, became an integral part of the work’s structure, both objective and symbolic, tending to round its corners, blur its boundaries, and lighten its texture. The patient, slow, manual de-weaving (a term coined by Bucarelli) of the painted surface consisted for Emblema of a process, practical and at the same time cognitive, the selective subtraction of the threads of the weft and warp of the canvas, proceeding by creating geometric patterns (straight, orthogonal, and false diagonal lines), until the light passed through the surface of the painting and cast shadows on the wall behind, with variable effects of transparency that revealed the inner spatial quality of the raw material of painting itself for Emblema: the canvas, and whatever exists around it, light, space, and time. Space is an idea of the limit as definition of infinite. Emblema ends up reducing the image into an aggregate, almost exoteric, system of proportions: the plane and the retroplane are connected by the parallel rhitmycal unthreading. Almost as if height, width and depth ratios, were regulated by a golden section. Theare appear in the limited thickness of the frame work several trasparent strata of coloured canvas that create depht, that almost invisibily interlace and juxtapose the ortogonal threads of the canvas, wich is, in the process, dematerialized.

There was a time when Emblema, almost like verification, exhibited his large canvases and dyed burlaps free in the landscape. He wanted to see if nature he accepted the artist's sign in his own right. From the verification he made the colored metallic net sculptures. It is as if these sculptures had been made sensitive to light, exposed to receive and retain the imprint, the sign, the measure, the air of the unspoken landscape. Nature is also made of signs, of invisible symbols that are not seen but caught in the trap of painting must be manifest.

They are both assumption of investigation and finitely pictorial result of a period of experimentation on the relationships between visual perception, space environment and volumetric construction. Door is indeed a sculpture, an architectural element but also, and above all, a painting destructured in space. Elements of traditional paintings are all recognizable: color, canvas, wooden stretcher. Emblema puts in strict dialogue the architecture of the hosting space with the intrinsic, visual architecture of the artwork. •

This works, usually presented outdoors, was often painted with a blue, a red and a white that Emblema prepared himself to achieving a chromatic surface, ables to absorbs light in order to to weaken and underpower any reflecting effects. In EMBLEMA's relationship to Land Art the path to transparency went from a pictorial intervention on the landscape itself, transcended by application of paint created from organic raw matter directly on trees to more evanescent environmental installations revealing the landscape through transparent jute canvas. In his parallel pictorial research the artist progressively evolved from the application of natural elements to the plane surface, passing through the integration of the burlap itself as a pictorial element, to his Un-woven canvases, where jute's wires are removed from the surface of the canvas, leaving a glimpse of the light-space that lies behind the picture. As such, EMBLEMA added literal shadow on the wall, paradoxically creating depth and dimension. The works from the series Structure / Porte are de-constructed canvases. They present all the elements of the traditional 'quadro', the stretcher, the jute, the color, the transparency and mark the relationship indoor-outdoor, landscape and pictorial plane.
